138 Free Video Walkthroughs for book owners

Our Excel 2016 books/e-books have a free video walk-through for every lesson

It is important to realize that the videos are not useful as a learning resource on their own.  This is because it isn’t possible to learn Excel 2016 from a video tutorial for the reasons explained in this article:  Why you can’t effectively learn Excel 2016/365 using a Video Tutorial.

Smart Method books are the only books that have a free video walk-through for every lesson that can be viewed online. If you have difficulty completing a lesson in the book (or e-book) you can watch the corresponding video walk-through to identify where you are going wrong. Each video shows one of our Excel consultants completing a lesson from your book.  You should always try to complete each lesson using your book and only consult the video if you have difficulties completing the lesson.

  1. The opening exercises 1 – 3 do not match the Excel Spreadsheets – The exercise for Inventory-1 only works if you convert the data to a data table!

    1. All of the sample files have been thoroughly tested and should always match what is shown in the books.

This page refers to the 2016 Essential Skills course, but your question refers to Lesson 1-3 of our 2016 Expert Skills course, so the most likely explanation is that you have downloaded the wrong sample file set. You can find the sample files for 2016 Expert Skills on the 2016 Expert Skills page.

Lesson 1-3 does not require the data to be placed inside a Table in order to work. Using the Data > Sort & Filter > Filter option will work as shown in the lesson. If this isn’t working for you, the most likely explanation is that you are not using Excel 2016. This course was designed entirely for Excel 2016 so if you are using an older version there are likely to be differences.

  2. Hello, I have bought two books: Excel 2016 Essential Skills and Excel 2016 Expert Skills, but I can’t find the excercise file, where I could donwload the exercise file?

  3. Hi, when I’m testing my Autosave, it takes longer than one minute to save even though I have it set to save every minute. Also my file name in the title bar says ‘read only’ and doesnt give me the option to ‘save as’? How do I fix this? Nat

    1. AutoSave often takes longer than 1 minute, even when set to 1 minute. It’s not clear exactly why this is, but it’s likely that autosaving is treated as a low priority task that Excel does ‘when it has time’ and allows to be delayed if it is doing higher priority tasks.

If Read Only files aren’t behaving in the same way for you as shown in the course it’s possible that you’re not using the same version of Excel that the course was designed for. If you’re definitely using Excel 2016 you may need to apply updates to make sure that you are using the latest version. Updating your version of Excel is covered at the start of the course.

  4. Dear Mr Smart,
I have just bought your excel 2016 essential skills, I have downloaded the samples as per instructions but unfortunately I am unable to unzip the files to begin the exercises, I did not have any issues on the previous version of 2007, please advise how do I go about resolving this issue.

    Thanks
    Claudio
